Social media are computer mediated technologies that
allows the creating and sharing of information, ideas, career, interests and
other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. Social media are
interactive. It facilitate the development of networks by connecting a users
profile with those of other individuals and or groups. Social networks are one
of the most useful communication methods of today’s world. Social networks have
become an integral part of student social life. These networks have become
important as they serve as platforms for users to interact and communicate with
their peers. Social networks are now been seen as learning platforms or
communities that could be utilized to enhance student engagement and
performance.
An interesting aspect of social media is that it is not
limited to desktop or laptop computers, but be accessed through mobile
applications and smart phones making it very accessible and easy to use. Popular
social network platforms on mobile and wed applications include facebook,
twitter, YouTube, whatsapp etc.. these platforms have specific functions and
modes of communication although their functions are mostly related.
In order to study the effects of social media on students
in our community, we the students of S.N.D.P B.Ed College Adimaly, decided to
conduct a survey based on the topic “A Study on the Influence of Social Media
on Students”. This survey mainly focused on the opinion and experiences of
students in our community.
BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT OF THE STUDY
To Analise the general information the investigation
select the different students of S.N.D.P.H.S Adimali. I distribute the questionnaire
to 35 students and most of them are male students.
We all know that the Internet revolution changed the
information world with regard to sharing and retrieved at information in
whatever form regardless of the person’s location. Through the Internet, a
number of technologies emerged, and one technology that is making waves with
regard to information sharing and communication are the social media networks.
The evolution of social media has cut across all facts of society with its
positive and negative impacts. Social media has transformed and impactful on
communication, learning, research and education in general among the variety of
online tools which are available for communication. Social networking sites
have become the most modern and attractive tools for connecting people
throughout the world. Through this platform, individuals and organizations
create profiles, share and exchange information on various activities.
A number of studies have been conducted to find out the
impact of social media on academic performance of students. There are positive
and also negative impacts of social media on academic performance of students. There
are positive and negative impacts of social media on academic performance of
students. Social network sites provide a platform for the youth to participate
in communities that help them to learn, and practice skills within a particular
knowledge area. On the other hand the process use at social networks will make
the students addict to it.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
Social networking websites are currently being used
regularly by millions of people. The use of social networking sites has been so
wide spread that they have caught the attention of academic industries of the
world. Today the use of social networks among students are increased rapidly.
They are more interested in using facebook. Twitter and other networking
services, because of their probable impact on society. Most sites help
strangers connect with other through sharing personal interests political and economical
views or simply recreational activities. Some sites accommodate distinct views,
while others attracts people based on similarities such as common language or
shared racial, sexual, religious or nationality based identities.
Most people who are members of these sites, such as
facebook and my space participate in them on a daily basis. Each person who
becomes a members of social networking sites has the opportunity to create
his/her own web page or profile which is supposed to be the reflection of that person’s
personality.
Adimali is a place located in Idukki district in the
state of Kerala. Through conducting a study on social networking enables us to
understand the character, behaviour, patterns of different users and their
positive band negative attitude towards networking.
The people who are surveyed are students and they have a
clear knowledge about social networking. Most of the students are engaged i
these sites more than their academic hours. It is necessary to conduct a study
about the influence of social media and different methods of collecting data.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
There have been a lot of debates on various problems and
media use to the impact that social media has on society and specifically its
effect on education. Some of these studies found a drop in students grades and
academic performance, and lack of time for studies as a consequences of social
media network participation. Preliminary investigation and interviews with some
teachers and students revealed a number of challenges in relation to student
participation on social media networks. These included a high addiction rate
among students which affects their time of study, the wrong usage of grammar
and spelling in social media discourse as well as distracting students from their
studies. The emergence of social media had lead to the falling standard at
students artificialities in English language, which has affected their studies,
since English is the universal language teachers use to teach in schools.
